Commemoration of the town of Kaub and the municipality of Weisel
The fateful year of 1813 covered the whole of Europe with war, blood, countless deaths and a chaos that is hard to imagine for people today.
During the persecution of Napoleon after the Battle of Leipzig, our homeland also got into the whirlpool of history. In the course of Nov/Dec 1813 more and more soldiers entered Weisel and its surroundings. In the end there were about 50,000 men, 15,000 horses, 182 guns and the whole accompanying troop, the Silesian Army under its commander-in-chief Feldmarschall Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher. In the woods around Weisel, Russian pioneers began building the bridge pontoons.
According to the will of the military, a bridge was to be built in Kaub in order to cross the Rhine by the shortest route, to pursue Napoleon and to place him definitively in his own country. This military enterprise is completely underestimated in its importance, but is of Europe-wide importance. A big event without thousands of deaths and injuries on the warfield, but a catastrophe for the people around Weisel and Kaub. Looting and imported diseases put an extreme strain on the population. Until today the events in Weisel and Kaub have not been forgotten and have burdened our homeland for years.
On New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, the people of Weisel and Kaub as well as Oberwesel and Bacharach commemorate this event 200 years ago. All citizens and guests are invited to the commemorations. On this occasion, the municipalities ask their citizens to light the distributed lights on 31.12.2013 from 16:00 and to place them in front of the windows.
